Explaining that traditional and herbal ingredients coupled with key science findings was key to elevating one’s health was Traditional Chinese Medicine expert CmDr Iko Chin.

Traditional food items such as petai contain many health benefits.jpg

Dr Chin said Chinese, Indian and Malay communities have long used traditional herbs in both their meals and medicine. For example, petai is commonly eaten with sambal and rice, but it also contains vitamin C and antioxidant properties great for building immunity.

Other common cooking ingredients are licorice and turmeric. Used heavily in Malaysian cuisine, both are packed with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antibacterial properties. Licorice root contains glycyrrhizic (pronounced as gliser-rizic) acid, which is traditionally consumed for better respiratory health, decreasing coughs and increasing the chemicals in our body to heal ulcers.

Meanwhile, turmeric has curcumin and is widely used to treat symptoms such as sneezing, itching, runny nose, congestion and improve respiratory health, he added.
